The ESUR Global Educational Programme on Contrast Media

Introduction

ESUR Global Educational Programme on the Safe Use of Contrast Media (CM)
Background

  • The ESUR board in 2009 has agreed to the proposal of Professor SK Morcos to launch an educational programme to promote the safe use of contrast agents worldwide.
  • All companies that manufacture contrast agents were invited to support this programme.
  • Bayer has agreed to offer unconditional financial support and help with the logistics of organising the educational meetings.
  • Bracco supported the educational meetings of the programme in Brazil in 2011.

Programme Objectives

  • Enhance the knowledge on safe use of CM worldwide
    • The programme is based on the ESUR Contrast Media Safety Committee (CMSC) guidelines and free of any commercial promotion.
    • It focuses on common issues concerning the safe use of CM in general population and in special patients groups such as renal impairment, pregnancy, and lactation.

Programme plans

  • Series of educational workshops to be organized worldwide.
  • The lectures and the CM guidelines booklet of the ESUR will be translated into several languages and freely available on the website of the society.
  • In each educational workshop senior local radiologists who are competent in the English language will be invited.
  • The radiologists who attend these workshops will be responsible for teaching their colleagues in suitable local meetings. They will use the lectures of the ESUR and the CM guidelines booklet translated into local languages for this purpose.
  • An ESUR representative will attend these local meetings to offer support if required.

  • Extracellular water soluble contrast media (CM); an overview (by SKM)
  • Acute non-renal reactions to iodinated and Gd based CM (by HT)
  • Delayed adverse reactions to iodinated CM (by MFB)
  • Delayed adverse reactions to Gd-CM; Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF) (by GHP)
  • Contrast induced nephropathy (by SKM)
  • Extravasation of CM (by MFB)
  • ESUR guidelines on use of CM in certain clinical situations (by HT)
    • Pregnancy and lactation
    • Thyroid disease
    • Renal impairment
    • Diabetic patients on metformin

Programme activities in 2015 and 2016

Twenty eight countries have participated so far in the in the ESUR Global Education Programme on Safe Use of CM. In 2016, workshops will be organised in Peru, Argentina and South East Asia. The programme continues to receive unconditional support from Bayer AG.


Programme activities in 2016

A session on CM was organised during the meeting of the International Congress of Radiology in Buenos Aires , Argentina, September 2016. Professor Thomson covered this session. A workshop was organised in Jakarta, Indonesia, on 5/11/2016. Professor Morcos was the speaker. In early 2017, a workshop will be organised in Peru and will be covered by Professor Heinz-Peer. Professor Morcos has decided to finish his role as the moderator of this programme. A new moderator should be appointed soon.

ESUR contrast media education programme in Columbia 9/11/2012

The ESUR CM Global Educational Programme workshop held in Bogota, Colombia on Friday, 9 November, 2012 and attended by representatives from the following Latin American countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Uruguay, and Venezuela. The speakers were Professors SK Morcos and G Heinz-Peer. The meeting was sponsored by an unconditional grant from Bayer, Germany.
